Platinum Wine Club Picks

Renieri Brunello di Montalcino – Tuscany, Italy 2012
Renieri is an excellent producer of Brunello. The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino offers a gorgeous appearance with a dark burgundy color and thick saturation. The bouquet is rich and complete with layer after layer of ripe fruit intensity. The effect is succulent and rich. This Brunello drinks beautifully right now and shows a contemporary style with thick extraction and soft tannins. The mouthfeel also delivers good density and fullness, and that does not come easy in this vintage.

Champagne Club Picks

JM Labruyere Prologue Brut Grand Cru Champagne – Champagne, France
The Labruyère family’s roots are in Beaujolais, but their holdings have expanded to include the Domaine Jacques Prieur in Burgundy and now this grower Champagne venture based around sought-after vineyards in Verzenay which used to go into Dom Pérignon. “Prologue” has the viscosity and mineral drive of a much more-expensive Champagne, with a deep straw-gold core moving to copper at the rim. The nose is a deep and expressive melding of yellow apple, dried pineapple, preserved lemon, toasted bread, brioche dough, white mushrooms, honeysuckle, and white flowers. The concentrated palate evolves to deliver red fruits with hints of red currant alongside lemon curd, hazelnut, and brioche leading to an extremely long and complex finish. It’s a wine that walks that ‘high wire’ like only Champagne can, combining a full-bodied, rich mouthfeel and the freshness and minerality we all crave from the best Champagnes.

92 PTS JS – Drink now through 2030 – Suggested Retail Price: $65 Club Price: $57 – To go only

Bruno Paillard NV Première Cuvée Extra Brut – Champagne, France
The Premiere Cuvee is a very personal interpretation of the whole region, through the selection of 35 of the 320 crus of champagne. The NV Brut Première Cuvée (Disgorged 07/2016) has a bright straw-gold color. The blend of Pinot Noir (45%), Chardonnay (33%) and Pinot Meunier (22%) opens with a clear, fresh and open, very elegant and generous bouquet of bright, ripe fruits (melons, lemons) with beautiful chalk, brioche and toast flavors as well as emerging notes of sweet cherries and wild strawberries. Nice purity. This is a highly elegant, fresh, textured and tightly woven but very well balanced cuvée with lovely purity and a persistently salty, citrus-fresh and cleansing finish with good grip. This is an extraordinary effort.
