Leviathan Red Wine– ST Helena, CA – 2013 –
Andy Erickson’s Leviathan is gorgeous once again in 2013. Plump, juicy and forward, the 2013 packs a serious punch. Still it is impossible not to notice that this year Leviathan is made in a more aromatic, lifted style than in the past, when the wine has been much more bombastic. Readers looking for a supple, exuberant Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine that requires little cellaring should check out the 2013 Leviathan. 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Syrah, 24% Merlot, and 7% Cabernet Franc for Leviathan’s tenth anniversary bottling.

Peter Michael Au Paradis Bordeaux Red Blend – Oakville, CA – 2014 –
Paradis is our estate grown Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from the Oakville vineyard that we purchased in 2009. The wine itself is at least 75% Cabernet Sauvignon with the balance being Cabernet Franc. The red Aiken series soil of this vineyard site produces a meaty expression of these varietals. The name translates to “in heaven” and recalls a magical moment at a Michael Family campout on a hilltop in our vineyards. They awoke to discover a sea of fog below them and a bright new day above. The youngest grandson, then about six, asked, “Are we in heaven?” The nose offers elegant notes of cassis, black cherry, chocolate, licorice, cloves, cinnamon and an exotic touch of orange. In the mouth, the texture is velvety and loaded with black currant, liqueur of cassis, game, black berry liqueur, black olives, coconut, plum eau-de-vie, and an iron-like minerality. The mouth feel is round, refined, complex and meaty with an incredible length of finish. The 2014 Au Paradis will continue to age gracefully for three decades or more. Blend: 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Cabernet Franc.
